铂金是一种本身即呈天然白色的贵金属。铂金的年开采量仅为黄金的二十分之一，而一盎司的铂金需从10吨的铂金矿石中历经5个月才能提炼出来。国内的铂金首饰通常含有90％的纯铂金，并被打上“Pt900”的标志。铂金的白色光泽自然天成，长期佩戴也不会褪色。而铂金的坚硬又使其成为钻石的最好的朋友。而白色K金是黄金加上某些合金后呈现白色。它最多仅含75％的黄金。
铂金与K金可以从如下几点进行区别：
铂金是一种天然纯白色的金属，K白金是黄金与钯，镍，银和锌等金属的合金，故又称K白黄金。
铂金稀有，年产量比黄金少很多，更为珍贵。
铂金密度高，一件铂金首饰比一件K白金类似首饰重20%。
铂金抗强酸、碱腐蚀，抗氧化，化学性质比K白金稳定。
铂金首饰均打有“PT”印记及成色。如“PT900”就是指该首饰铂金制品，铂金的含量为90%。而K白金的记号如“18KWG”，是按其所含的黄金成分作主要印记
铂金的成分是什么?
黄金的特点之一就是柔软，所以难以镶制出各种精美的款式，尤其当镶嵌珍珠、宝石和翡翠等珍品时容易被丢失。因此，人们在黄金中加入少量银、铜、锌等金属以增加黄金的强度和韧性，这样制成的金饰，又称K金。
K金可以根据需要配制成各种颜色，在国际上流行的K金首饰各种颜色都有，大家常见的有黄色和白色。黄金中混入25%的钯或镍，就会成为白色，组成它的主要成份还是黄金，这的叫法就叫白K金。
就目前的科技水平而言，还无法提炼出纯度达100%的纯金材料。因此，标示金制品中纯金含量的金位标准K，一般是将纯金称为24K金，但它是理论上含金量为100%的金，实际上并不存在。所以国家标准中，商家标示黄金饰品的含金量一律不得使用“24K金”的不规范标准方法。既然称纯金为24K，即理论上的含金量为100%，则1K即代表金制品含纯金占1/24，约4.16%。18K金代表含金量为18/24，也就是含纯金75%，其余的为其它的材料如银或铜。
俗话说“金无足赤”，一般黄金饰品中都含有1%以下的其它金属。对于黄金制品含金量的成色问题，国家标准有很明确的规定，即商家销售的每件黄金饰品必须挂牌标明其含金量和重量。黄金饰品的重量一律使用国家法定计量单位。其含金量应该使用“K金”(不含24K金)、“足金”(含金量不少于99%)、“千足金”(含金量不少于99.9%)，不得使用“千足纯金”、“纯金”以及实际上不存在的“24K金”、“9999”等不规范的标准方法。

要鉴别出是铂金还是白银有五种方法，现分述如下：
比较法。铂金用肉眼看的话是灰白色的，质地比较坚硬，硬度为4.3。白银用肉眼看，颜色是洁白的，质地比较细腻光润，硬度比铂金要低，硬度为2.7。
辨别印鉴。由于每件首饰都必须刻印成份印鉴，所以，只要见到是Pt，或者见到是Platinum、Plat，那就是铂金；要是见到S，或者见到Silver，那就是白银。另外，对铜质镀银符号要注意，它是SF。
称重量。倘若遇到印鉴模糊，或者印鉴已被截去，便可采用此法。铂金的密度高，比重是21.4千克／米3，白银的比重是10.49千克／米3。这样，同一体积的白银重量只有铂金的一半，两者一比较就容易辨别了。
火化辨别。有时遇到材料较少，放在手上重量感觉不明显，同时又没有印鉴，那么只好采用这种方法。铂金加温或火烧，冷却后，颜色是不变的；而白银加温或火烧，冷却后，颜色就显润红色，或是黑红色。
化学法。将铂金磨在试金石上，用硝酸、盐酸混合液滴几滴，如果磨痕存在，就说明是铂金，至于成色高低，只是颜色上有些差别；如果将此液滴在白银上，磨痕就会溶失。
